Storm within (haibun +¸haiku)

On her walk home, she listened to Deva Premal, she had purchased three mantras last night…yep, three of the same mantras chanted differently. It gave her energy to start her shift and blessed her when she came home at the end of her long night.

She reached her home minutes after  midnight;  she gave her loyal feline friend a cuddle, then fired up the laptop. She must have touched a button she was not used to with her new Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge NEWS popped up with the first article shocking her.  “All my babies are dead”…her hand hesitated on the mouse for a split second and then she clicked.  A tragedy!  Preventable, unnecessarydrunk driving tragedy.  It was as if the weather of that nice evening walk home in the cool brisk air had changed dramatically.  This was why she no longer had television.  This was the reason she stopped purchasing newspapers 14 years ago but the internet still bled bad news.

home at twilight
sits with a midnight snack
and, then the storm broke
prays for those who’ll never rest
grieving for their babies

(haiku)

three dead children
parents’ limbs ripped of their souls
idle bicycles

a father,
a grandfather
gone forever

families,
communities and nations
grieve

the storm invaded,
addiction grabbed too many
victims

Haiku Horizons “storm”

Deva Premal – Gayatri Mantra

Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ

tát savitúr váreṇ(i)yaṃ

bhárgo devásya dhīmahi

dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

We meditate on the glory of the Creator;
Who has created the Universe;
Who is worthy of Worship;
Who is the embodiment of Knowledge and Light;
Who is the remover of Sin and Ignorance;
May He open our hearts and enlighten our Intellect.

  1. I wondered why we are so addicted to pain and violence … and then I read this post and I saw that the media in all its forms are pushers of pain and violence. I’m not saying we should not know about the world’s problems (I think it’s pretty difficult to avoid the realities of life) but to pump 24/7 horror and call it news … I don’t know – there’s something that just doesn’t seem to jive. A great write .. it inspires reflection.

    • Yes, I avoid the media and not having a television helps, not listening to radio helps too but this happened in a town near where I used to live and I could not help it. I thought, perhaps youths will be calling our service later to ask for help.

  2. We cannot completely protect ourselves from tragedy. Drink driving and using a cell phone while driving is so irresponsible. We never know when our time is up. It could happen to any of us who drive. I just saw an interview with a young father who became a paraplegic playing cricket with his son in the backyard. He fell the wrong way and broke his neck. We must thank the Lord we made it this far in one piece. Enjoyed your poem.

    • You are right, Rall, we do not decide. My best friend fell from sitting on her bed putting on her socks and had to wear a neck brace for months…she needed to slow down, she did.
