mind over matter (haibun)

Hot, heavy dampness hangs in the air, as she rocks in front of her window looking out over the river. The air conditioner is on the fritz again and the fans that had been running 24/7 give little breeze to comfort even an ant.  The temperatures are unforgiving at 40C and 92% humidity.

The house is silent except for the creaking of her rocking chair and the buzz of useless fans. Her breathing has finally calmed after her morning paroxysm of asthma. The weather in the past few weeks has forced her to use up all her sick days. She does not know how she will manage now with the weeks ahead if she is  unable to get to work…again. Her wheezing becomes louder and she knows she has to calm her thoughts or else she will have another asthma attack.

She often tries to use her imagery times like this. Placing a wet cold compress on her forehead she imagines she is in the Northwest Territories, hearing the crunchy sound of her feet on the snow as she walks outside. She is dressed in a down filled parka and snow pants and white clouds escape her mouth when she exhales. Night has already fallen and she waits patiently for signs from “the other side”. Looking up at the sky, she starts noticing the different hues lighting up the heavens and she is dizzy with joy;  she kneels in reverence, listening to the echoes of her ancestors. A veil of calm envelopes her until a piercing whistle from her tea kettle brings her back to reality.

    • Yeah, most of this was fiction but twice in the past three weeks we have had no AC at work and it is scary. Sometimes I feel as if my lungs are sticking together, refusing to inflate. I’m good in my own home 🙂

      • I was in Palm Springs, and it was 120 in the shade. I felt like I couldn’t breathe in that heat. Anything over 95, and I’m miserable. At work, yikes. Even scarier at those temps.

      • Well even 35 (95F) is too high for me. I am happy in low 80’s forever! haha but I try not to complain since our winters last 6 months and last winter it was the coldest we have had in decades.

      • I fall at least once or twice each year but now I have good cleats I put on my boots. However my last fall was in May flat on both knees on cement…I tripped. I am still in excruciating pain. My doc seems to think it is not important …can’t wait to see my new rheumotologist. I am afraid my current doctor is super nice but had trouble treating “older people” and taking us seriously.

      • I think some people have a harder time with ageism…assuming if there is already arthritic problems if you fall, well, it’s gonna hurt anyway…just take longer to heal. I pick my battles…in three weeks I see a new rheumatologist…so if he says it is normal to feel such pain after 4 months…we’ll see.

  1. Any discomfort can be scary. Good to know you are well.
I’m still healing from falling once off a ladder and then down some steps –
Someone said don’t grow old. But I am managing close to 10,000 – 15,000 steps a day with some form of exercise daily.

I would love to see those northern lights. I can take cold more than heat. But I like a happy medium. 🙂

    • I fall a lot too especially on the ice but last fall was in May. It does not stop me from walking as much as I can every day as well. During my vacation I averaged 10 Km a day…when I am working 5km a day.

One is expected to cherish moments not significantly great but even so-so. Appreciating the lesser ones will one later be blessed with the bigger ones. It works that way apparently!
